18 Weeks

From here on out I have decided to steal a format of weekly baby progress from one of our good friends…Thanks Liz!  And of course, there will always be pictures to follow of this continuously growing belly:) How Far Along: 18 weeks 5 days How Big is Baby: Head to rump, the baby is about 5 1/2 inches long (about the length of a bell pepper) and he/she weighs almost 7 ounces. Development: He/She's busy flexing his/her arms and legs.  His/Her blood vessels are visible through their thin skin, and his/her ears are now in their final position, although they're still standing out from his/her head a bit. A protective covering of myelin is beginning to form around his/her nerves, a process that will continue for a year after he/she's born. If we're having a girl, her uterus and fallopian tubes are formed and in place. If we're having a boy, his genitals are noticeable now, but he may hide them during an ultrasound. How huge is mommy: I have gained between 4-6 lbs total since the beginning, which I believe is pretty good.  We go to the doctors next week, so I will have a more accurate weight then…YIKES!  Even though I have only gained 4-6 lbs, I feel as if I have gained like 10-12 lbs. Movement: At the beginning of 18 weeks, I started feeling little nudges and it has been wonderful.  It's so neat to feel him/her move in there. Food: Still love the dairy (cottage cheese and milk), egg salad sandwiches, and grapes.  Surprisingly enough, I am less into sweets, which is a good thing for the baby. Belly Button: Still an innie, let's keep it that way! Preparations: As mentioned in the previous post, we did go to IKEA and purchase a new closet system for the baby's room.  And to our own surprise as well, we managed to put it all together without one bit of fighting (refer to previous post) 🙂  It looks awesome and will definitely give us some good storage.

Pregnancy Symptoms: Feeling pretty dang good overall.  Still get tired a lot, but definitely have more energy than in the first trimester.  Otherwise, the continued Charlie Horses plague me, but have improved since stretching before bedtime. Labor Signs: HECK NO!  Hopefully not for 22 more weeks (or at least until we are full-term). Milestones: Feeling the baby move has been a pretty HUGE milestone.  I cannot wait until Erik can feel it too.  I know he is jealous that I can and he cannot 🙂  On a side note, I purchased my first pair of preggo jeans, but as of now, I still fit into my regular jeans.  Trust me, that ain't lasting much longer! Looking forward to next: We go for our targeted US on 9/2/10, which is when we find out officially the sex of our baby.  And of course to make sure that he/she is otherwise a healthy little being.  And of course, with being a Physician Assistant in Pediatric Neurosurgery, I need to have a clear image of the brain and spinal cord to make sure all is as should be:)

Seriously?! You have only gained 4 to 6 lbs at 18 weeks? That is really impressive! I had gained about 20 when I was 18 weeks. Share your secret.

Yeah it was 4 lbs at our 16 week 4 day visit. So I am guessing about 6 lbs now, but who knows what it will actually read on the scale at our 19 week 5 day visit…haha:) I have just been trying to maintain my normal eating patterns, but I can feel myself yearning for more food by the day!
